President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is preparing to launch strikes against drug cartels operating in Mexico, at a time of significant escalation in the administration’s efforts to combat narcotics trafficking and related violence.
Speaking during a briefing on Thursday, January 8, Trump declared that the United States is fully capable of dealing with the narcotics situation in Mexico in order to prevent more Americans from being victims of violence brought by the narcotics business.
“We’ve knocked out 97% of the drugs coming in by water, and we are going to start now hitting land with regard to the cartels.”
He accepted that criminal organizations have established themselves very well across Mexico, describing the situation as desperate.
Trump to Strike Mexico
Trump has also reaffirmed that the War Department is preparing air and land operations targeting cartel infrastructure, though specific timelines and operational details remain undisclosed.
He has further linked the drug situation in Mexico to the increased number of homeless individuals in the U.S and also the surging number of orphans and children being enrolled in shelters, foster homes and orphanages.
“The cartels are running Mexico. It is very, very sad to watch and see what has happened to that country. They are killing 250,000 to 300,000 people in our country every single year. The drugs situation is very horrible. It has devastated families. Generally, you lose a child or a parent. I mean, parents are dying, too, with drugs.”
The president has also confirmed that his administration has made progress in curbing drug inflows, particularly through maritime routes.

To show the extent of their efforts to curb the drug situation in the U.S, Trump has contrasted current border security measures with previous conditions, claiming unprecedented success.
“The border was a total mess for years. I did it the first time very quickly, and this time I did it even better because this was a bigger mess. This was a border like no other probably in the history of the world. There’s never been a border like that where anybody could just walk into your country,” Trump stated.
He stated that his administration is motivated by the fact that the reported cases of immigrants has significantly decreased, and they are sure that all measures taken by the U.S will succeed.
“The borders are ostensibly really closed now. Closed. You can’t come in. Nobody comes. Nobody even tries,” Trump concluded.
According to federal data, synthetic opioids accounted for the majority of the 112,000 overdose fatalities reported in 2023, a figure Trump referenced as part of his justification for expanded action.
Mexico Firmly Rejects Trump’s Announcement
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has swiftly responded and dismissed any possibility of U.S military operations on Mexican soil following President Trump’s announcement of planned strikes against drug cartels.
“It’s not going to happen. We operate in our territory, and we do not accept any intervention by a foreign government,” she declared.

Sheinbaum reaffirmed Mexico’s sovereignty as non-negotiable, stressing that while Mexico values cooperation with the United States, it must occur strictly within the framework of Mexican law and territorial control.
The president also criticized unilateral military actions elsewhere in Latin America, warning they violate international law and undermine stability.
Mexico’s foreign ministry echoed her stance, condemning force as a solution and advocating dialogue instead.
Mexican security officials have pointed out that security collaboration will continue, but military intervention remains off the table.
However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reassured that no unilateral military action is planned, highlighting ongoing intelligence and law enforcement cooperation instead.

Thanks for sharing this update. The part about shifting focus to land-based cartel operations after success with water routes was interesting. It shows a new approach to tackling the drug crisis. The situation does sound serious if direct strikes are being considered.
