The Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff has today, January 7, 2026, announced that the estimated Russian military personnel losses, both killed and wounded, have reached 1,214,500 since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022.
The latest report indicates that 1,040 Russian troops were put out of action in the last 24 hours, and significant equipment, 11,515 war tanks, were destroyed in the last 3 days, in addition to 23,865 armored fighting vehicles, 35,857 artillery systems, 434 aircraft, 347 helicopters, over 100,000 operational-tactical UAVs destroyed, 28 ships and boats, and 2 submarines.
These figures highlight the sustained intensity of fighting along the front lines, particularly in eastern Ukraine, coming after Russia released a lower number of casualties than the reported ones by independent trackers, such as Ukraine’s Minfin index, corroborating the latest totals, showing consistent daily Russian losses averaging around 1,000 personnel in recent months, pushing the cumulative total beyond Russia’s pre-war active strength of approximately 1 million troops.

Russia does not publicly disclose its losses, last reporting 5,937 deaths in September 2022, with Moscow routinely throwing dismissing sheds to Ukrainian figures, terming them inflated, and rarely comments on its own losses.
The milestone comes amid a brutal winter campaign, where both sides are reporting intense drone and artillery duels, with Ukrainian forces having increasingly relied on unmanned systems to offset Russian numerical advantages, while Moscow continues assaults in small-group infantry attacks supported by limited armor, to grind forward.

Analysts have noted that Russia’s ability to sustain such losses stems from aggressive recruitment, including high bonuses for volunteers, prison inmates, and foreign fighters, alongside economic mobilization, having no such financial muscles, getting strangled in the middle and demographic strains are evident in the excess male mortality data and court declarations of missing soldiers as deceased highlight the war’s long-term toll on Russian society.
The war, now in its fourth year, continues to exact a heavy toll on both sides, with no immediate prospects for resolution despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, including indirect talks involving international mediators, which have yielded little progress, leaving the front lines as the primary arbiters.
