Chogoria Girls High School is a national girls’ school situated in Chogoria, Tharaka Nithi County.
The school was started in 1922 by a missionary from the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, Dr. Clive Irvine, who also founded the church and the hospital
It began as a preparatory grade mixed school. In 1952, it achieved the title of Primary School and Junior School.
In 1953, the Junior School was terminated, and the Intermediate School was introduced.
The school continued with its co-education system, with classrooms at Chogoria Boys Secondary and dormitories at Chogoria Girls Secondary School.
During this time, its catchment area covered the whole of the former Meru and Embu districts.
In 1965, the idea of a secondary school arose among the local people, and the intermediate section was slowly phased out. In the same year, the girls joined the boys to continue with co-education.
Chogoria Girls history
The school headmaster in 1968 decided to separate the boys from the girls, which gave birth to Chogoria Girls Secondary School, with its first head teacher, Mrs. Charity Mugo.
In 1969, the girls moved to the present 20-acre site. The physical facilities were quite inadequate, but through the efforts of the local community, the P.C.E.A. church, and assistance from the government and parents, the school grew.
It continued as a single stream up to 1979 when the second stream was introduced. In 1980, the Advanced Level (‘A’ level) Arts stream was started.
From 1980, the school continued with two streams in Ordinary Level (‘O’ level) and one stream in ‘A’ level Arts
The ‘A’ level stream was phased out in 1989 when Kenya’s education system changed to the 8-4-4 system. The third stream in ‘O’ level was then started in 1990.
In 1996, the fourth stream was started, and soon after (in 2001), the fifth stream was introduced.
The school has, over the years, consistently upheld a strong academic record in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
Each year, over 300 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Performance
Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
This was, however, replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 353 candidates, with more than 94% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

The school’s impressive performance continued in 2024, with candidates achieving a mean score of 8.932, a slight improvement from the 8.6520 mean score recorded by KCSE 2023 candidates.
School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Chogoria Girls High School was placed in Cluster One (I), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
