Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed to take action against the man seen threatening a police officer with a panga in Nakuru.
Speaking during the 20th Commemoration of RECSA and Destruction of Illicit Small Arms and Light Weapons in Ngong on June 13,2025, the CS stated that individuals who misuse firearms or abuse civilian freedoms will be dealt with firmly, noting that accountability applies to everyone.
“I recently witnessed a concerning incident in Nakuru. A citizen was seen wielding a panga while police officers were working hard to restore calm in the area. We are currently dealing with a small gang operating in Nakuru,” said Murkomen.
In his speech, Murkomen praised the police officers for maintaining calm and exercising restraint despite provocation from the crowd.

However, he reiterated that it was a clear case of double standards for civilians to cheer on the man carrying a panga.
He pointed out that if the roles were reversed, that is, if a police officer had acted in the same manner, the same crowd would likely have called for disciplinary action against the officer.
At the same time, he stated that police officers who misuse firearms will also be dealt with accordingly.

“While a few police officers may violate human rights, we will deal with such cases on an individual basis. We are committed to striking a balance between justice and accountability. Those who abuse their authority will be brought to justice,” he added.
Additionally, he acknowledged that some police officers operate under difficult conditions and called for the need to give them maximum support.

Ruto Speech on Illegal Firearms
President William Ruto in his address stated that a firearm in the wrong hands is not just a potent weapon; it is a direct assault on the safety of citizens, the stability of society, and the peace.
“Today’s ceremony, which marks the destruction of more than 6,000 illegal firearms recovered between 2022 and 2025, therefore sends a clear and powerful message: we will not allow violence to take root in our communities, and we remain firmly committed to disarming those who threaten our peace and to strengthening the safety and security of every citizen,” Ruto said.
He recognized and thanked the National Police Service, particularly the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons, for their exemplary coordination and facilitation of the many stakeholders that were engaged in the mission of cracking down illegal weapons.
