Daystar University is mourning the loss of its long-serving lecturer, David Kariuki Thuku, who served 31 years at the institution.
In a statement dated Wednesday, October 29, the university announced his passing on Friday, October 24, 2025.
“With deep sorrow, yet in humble submission to God’s perfect will, we announce the passing of Mr. David Kariuki Thuku, who went to be with the Lord on Friday, 24th October 2025, following a long and brave battle with illness,” the statement read.
The university described David Kariuki’s leadership as one characterized by exceptional dedication, compassion, and service.
Daystar also stated that he will be fondly remembered for his unwavering faith, humility, and deep commitment to his family, students, church, and community.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, at PCEA Bahati Church, Nairobi, starting at 3:00 p.m. The burial service will take place on Friday, October 31, at PCEA Mürügürü Church, Nyeri, starting at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at his family home in Mürügürü.
Profile of David Kariuki Thuku, Who Worked at Daystar for 31 Years
David joined Daystar University on September 5, 1994, as an Assistant Dean of Students. A year later, he was appointed Dean of Students. He held the positions of Associate Dean and Dean of Student Affairs for 21 years.
In these roles, he supervised a team responsible for leadership development (DUSA), student counseling, disciplinary matters, sporting activities, and international student affairs. Initially reporting to the Director of Student Development, his title later changed from Dean of Students to Associate Dean, Student Affairs, even as his supervisor’s title became Dean of Community Life.

In February 2015, David was redeployed as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mission and Theology, a role he held until his passing. His students and colleagues have left an indelible mark on the Daystar community.
Before joining Daystar University, he worked with the Fellowship of Christian Unions (FOCUS), a Christian organization ministering among students at universities and colleges in Kenya.
He also served as a TSC teacher at Githiga High School, Kiambu, where he taught Maths and Physics (1981–1982), and held positions as Deputy Headmaster and Christian Union Patron.
Education Background
David Kariuki earned an MA in Theological Studies from Wheaton College, Illinois, under a scholarship from the Billy Graham Center, graduating in December 1992.

He also earned a B.Ed. in Science (Maths & Physics) from Kenyatta University College of Nairobi in 1980
