Biography
Tom Daktari whose real name is Andrew Wambua Mboya is a passionate comedian who has moved Kenyans on social media through his simple and well-packaged innovative skits.
Wambua’s acting prowess boomed during the pandemic when comedians were under pressure to come up with well-structured skits to stay on top of the game. At the same time, Tom Daktari teamed up with comedian Sam Kioko and produced eye-catching content that grabbed the attention of many Kenyans.
Wambua Early Life and Education
Tom was born into a humble family of nine children, five boys and four girls in Nzaikoni Area, Kithiani.
He took his primary education at Kombu Primary School after which he proceeded to St. Martin Kithunguini High School for his secondary education.
Moreover, Wambua faced various financial challenges in raising fees since he emanated from a poor background. However, he was the first child to join a boarding school in their family.
Furthermore, in an interview with Churchill, Wambua recalls how other students came to school with huge shopping bags while he could only manage essentials.
Mwalimu Tom Relocates to the City
Andrew Wambua after completing his high school education, moved to Nairobi and stayed with his elder brother. The brother opened an egg business for him which never flourished since he lacked the skill to prepare the eggs and salad well as the customers desired. The business only lasted for one day and he managed to only sell 10 eggs.
Additionally, he also tried his luck in selling oranges by the roadside which also failed.
After the two businesses failed, on the next venture, his brother took him for an audition for set books that were held at Kayole Social Hall where he got the chance to present oral literature. It was at this point that his career in travelling theatre commenced.
Later, his brother enrolled him on film studies at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.
Mwalimu Tom Comedy Journey
In his winding journey in comedy, Tom at one point went for Churchill show auditions. However, he left the stage disappointed since his jokes never rib-cracked his audience. Even after, trying a few more times his efforts never bore fruit.
Later, Tom joined the Ultimate Top Comic Competitions where he was able to proceed up to the semi-finals.
Nevertheless, Tom continued to meet with Sam Kioko to practice their lines.
He graduated in 2020 and collaborated with Sam Kioko from whence the Mwalimu Tom character was conceived.
Moreover, Tom and his collaborator acted on skits revolving around school episodes which became very popular, earning them millions of views. His YouTube channel currently has over 319,000 subscribers.
In addition, he has over 730,000 followers on TitTok with over 10 million likes.
