The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has commenced investigations after reports that a pistol used in the killing of Pan-Africanist Tom Mboya was bought by a man identified as Ndwiga Kathamba.
DCI noted that the move followed an article by Nation on July 6, 2024, revealing that a 92-year-old man had purchased the gun that killed Tom Mboya on July 5, 1969.
“The article reports that a 92-year-old man purchased the pistol that was used in the killing of Tom Mboya, a trade unionist, educator, Pan-Africanist, author, former minister and statesman,” reads part of the DCI statement.
“The DCI has initiated an investigation and necessary action will be taken once the investigation is complete.”
The article reports that Ndwiga, along with two others, were asked to take a secret oath and had been brought into the plot to eliminate Mboya six months earlier in January 1969.
Ndwiga shared that after 55 years, he couldn’t keep the secret anymore as he felt burdened by its weight and wanted to let it go.

The Killing of Tom Mboya
Mboya was assassinated on July 5, 1969, at Government Road presently known as Moi Avenue
News of his death led to riots in the city as Kenyans flocked to the Nairobi Hospital mourning the Pan-Africanist prompting police office to intervene.
More drama followed a week later during Mboya’s requiem mass at the Holy Family Cathedral on April 12 when angry protestors clashed with the police yet again.
Besides, 92-year-old Ndwiga in his narration noted that he was part of a group trained in Bulgaria and knew Mboya personally.
He claimed that important officials from Kiambu were behind the plot but failed to reveal more details.
According to Ndwiga, he was given money to buy guns discreetly from the black market near Kenya-Somalia border, to avoid being linked to the government.
Afterwards, the three received instructions to kill Tom Mboya, a plan which Ndigwa says he decided not to follow through and left for his home in Embu instead.

Investigations of Tom Mboya Assassination
Over the years, Tom Mboya’s assassination case went through ups and downs as some suspects were arrested and tried, while others remained elusive.
Nahashon Njenga one of the men with Ndwiga then was convicted of the killing and hanged.
Decades later, new information has come to light, bringing fresh hope into the investigation on the death of the former minister.
