Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a breakthrough by unveiling a new weapon designed to counter the Russian military’s use of the Unified Planning and Correction Module (UMPK) glide bombs, which have increasingly worked against Ukraine on the battlefield.
The Ukrainian government, led by Zelenskyy, has developed a domestically guided air bomb equipped with a module similar to the Russian UMPK, intended for use against Russian forces.
The new guided bomb was reportedly observed being carried by a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet.
In June 2025, it was announced that Ukraine’s “Medoid” design bureau began testing indigenous glide bombs fitted with UMPK guidance and gliding kits.
During the tests, a FAB-500 bomb was successfully dropped from a Su-24M bomber, achieving a range of 60 kilometers, with plans to extend this range to 80 kilometers.

Although the external design of the Ukrainian bomb resembles that of the Russian UMPK to expedite development, it features distinct internal components aimed at enhancing precision.
Reports indicate that the Ukrainian Air Force has been developing this capability since at least June 2024, with initial tests conducted in September 2024, and there have been indications of combat use, especially in the Kherson region.

The primary mission of Ukraine’s Medoid design bureau is to strengthen the nation’s defense capabilities through the innovation of domestic glide bomb technology.
This development serves as a direct response to Russia’s use of UMPK glide bombs.
About the Weapon
By producing its own glide kits, Ukraine can conduct more frequent and accurate airstrikes, which is crucial for maintaining military operations and targeting high-value objectives with increased precision.
Moreover, developing these weapons domestically reduces Ukraine’s reliance on foreign supplies, providing a reliable solution to meet the growing demand for glide bombs that external deliveries cannot fully fulfill.
Importantly, the glide kits are designed for compatibility with Soviet-made aircraft still in service with the Ukrainian Air Force.
While peace talks are ongoing, largely influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s diplomatic interventions, no significant breakthroughs have yet been made.

On August 15, 2025, Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss a potential ceasefire, but no agreement was reached. Initially advocating for an immediate ceasefire, Trump later shifted his focus towards a broader peace deal after Putin rejected the ceasefire-first approach.
On August 18, 2025, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders in Washington for discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine and possible territorial compromises. However, these talks did not yield any concrete progress toward either a ceasefire or a lasting peace agreement.
