The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a two-week temporary closure of a section of the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway (A8).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, the Authority indicated that the highway will be closed between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange.
KeNHA stated that the closure will begin on Saturday, August 23, 2025, and run through to Sunday, September 7, 2025. The authority explained that the move is necessary to allow for road construction and drainage works to ensure seamless connectivity between Makupa Bridge and the Changamwe area.
“Temporary closure of Mombasa–Nairobi Highway (A8) between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange from Saturday, August 23, 2025, to Sunday, September 7, 2025, to allow for road construction and drainage works to ensure seamless road connectivity along this section,” read the notice in part.
KeNHA Announces Two-Week Closure of Section of Nairobi-Mombasa Highway
KeNHA warned of potential traffic disruptions during the construction period and urged motorists to use service lanes as indicated in the traffic plan or as directed by traffic marshals.
Motorists heading towards Nairobi will be diverted before Makupa Bridge and rejoin the highway after the closed section.
Meanwhile, those heading towards Mombasa will use the diversion route near Seven Stars and Mitchell Cotts to bypass the construction area.
The closure affects the main entry point to Mombasa Island, and the delays are expected to disrupt travel and lead to lost business opportunities.

This comes after KeNHA closed the same section of the road for two weeks in November last year for similar works.
Former KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndung’u said the works are meant to improve connectivity between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe, while assuring road users of the authority’s commitment to minimising disruptions.
Rironi/Kamandura Interchange Closed for Two and a Half Months
Meanwhile, KeNHA informed the public of a temporary traffic disruption due to the closure of the Rironi/Kamandura Interchange at the junction of A8 (Waiyaki Way), Limuru Road, and A8 South (Mai Mahiu Road).
The closure is necessary for scheduled road works to reconstruct the Rironi/Kamandura Interchange, including slip roads, loops, and approach roads.
The works will take place from Friday, 22nd August 2025, to Friday, 31st October 2025 running for a period of close to two months and two weeks.
