National Police recruitment is a procedural exercise conducted by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), and one mistake can cost you the opportunity.
However, the Inspector General of Police (IG), together with the Kenya Police Service (KPS), the Administration Police Service (APS), and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), also have roles in the recruitment process.
Interested candidates must be diligent in ensuring their application is processed correctly and they are selected as recruits.
Applicants should follow these seven strategies to succeed during the recruitment process.
1. Have Knowledge About Exercise
Candidates should follow the official pages and websites of the NPSC, NPS, KPS and DCI for information about the recruitment.
This includes details like the venues, requirements, dates and times.
Lack of information about these critical things might make one miss out of the recruitment exercise.
For instance, one can go to the wrong recruitment centre or arrive at the wrong time.
2. Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements
Some of the basic requirements to join the NPS include;
- Must be a Kenyan citizen.
- Aged between 18 and 25 years for holders of a KCSE certificate or its equivalent, and up to 30 years for diploma and degree holders.
- Have a minimum KCSE grade D+
- Height & Weight: Men – minimum 5ft 8in (1.65m), Women – minimum 5ft 3in (1.60m).
Candidates should ensure they meet these requirements to avoid being disqualified from the recruitment exercise.
They should carry their National ID Card and KCSE certificates to prove their citizenship, age, and KCSE grade.
Candidates should also confirm that their height and weight are within the required range.

3. Prepare Required Documents
Bring originals and copies of:
- National ID card & a photocopy
- Academic certificates (KCSE, KCPE, or higher qualifications)
- Birth certificate
- Certificates of good conduct (if required)
- Any other supporting professional certificates
Missing these documents during recruitment will result in automatic disqualification.
Candidates should note that result slips are not accepted during the recruitment process.
4. Maintain Good Conduct
NPSC also conducts a background check on all recruits.
Therefore, applicants should ensure they have no criminal record.
They should also avoid bribery or attempting to influence recruitment officials, as this can lead to immediate disqualification and arrest.

5. Physical & Medical Fitness
Applicants must be physically, mentally, and medically fit.
They should exercise regularly in preparation for recruitment day.
Additionally, they should avoid drugs, alcohol, and unhealthy weight gain/loss.
Applicants should also ensure good dental and eye health by undergoing regular check-ups and treatment before the recruitment process.
6. Female Applicants Should Avoid Pregnancy
Female candidates must not be pregnant during the recruitment process and throughout the entire training period.
NPSC conducts pregnancy tests, and applicants who test positive cannot be picked.
7. Be Punctual
Report to the recruitment, interview, or training venue on the specified date and time.
They should also follow the instructions of the recruitment officers and remain disciplined at all times.
