Egerton University is planning to lay off lecturers and scrap five-degree courses as it works towards regaining its financial stability.
According to Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Kibwage, the move will help cure the persistent strikes by lecturers and university staff that have become synonymous with the institution in the recent past.
Addressing the media on Thursday, Kibwage said they have already issued a notice to declare some of the positions redundant to cut the wage bill.
The university also plans to scrap some degree courses that have failed to attract enough students to sustain them despite having hired lecturers for them.
“We have so far identified five-degree programs that we intend to scrap.
“Lecturers in those departments will have to exit and those qualified for other departments retained,” he said.

Last week, lecturers at the University accused the management of disobeying court orders that had directed the management to pay them full salaries and holding discussions with their union.
The dons had opposed a move by the University to reduce their salaries without engaging their union.
Egerton University has been struggling with a ballooning debt currently standing at the Sh9 billion mark.
This debt includes pending bills as of June, with management citing the pandemic as the main reason for the financial distress.
