University Student Kills Comrade After Alcohol Dispute

Police officers on Thursday, November 2, arrested a third-year student in Rongo University in connection with the murder of Abel Pchumba, his fellow student.

As per multiple reports, the third-year student stabbed the slain boy after a dispute while drinking earlier in the week. 

Sources indicated that the two students had been partaking of alcohol when the row ensued.  

The two, according to the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Samuel Gudu had disagreed over a yet to be confirmed reason.

Amid the clash, the suspect allegedly stabbed the slain boy in the stomach – leaving him in critical condition and with multiple stab wounds.

As per an official memo sent to the university’s fraternity, the student succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment at the Tabaka Mission Hospital in Kisii County. 

Police arrest suspect

On Friday, November 3, the National Police Service confirmed that the suspect in the case, was arrested by police officers in Migori pending investigation. 

“Police in Rongo yesterday arrested a suspect, one Titus Limangura in connection with the murder of Abel Chumba, his fellow male third year student at Rongo University,” the NPS stated on Friday. 

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the student succumbed to his injuries at Tabaka Mission Hospital after he was stabbed in the stomach by the suspect.” 

Meanwhile, Rongo University’s administration conveyed its condolences to the deceased’s family. His body was lying at the hospital’s mortuary.

In the internal memo dated November 2, the VC announced that Pchumba was until his death a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Journalism degree. 

Further, the University disclosed that Pchumba was born in 2002 and is a former student of Friends Bware Secondary School, Kitale.

The shocking death added to a worrying trend of deaths in Kenyan universities.

In another grueling case, a first-year female student at Pwani University in Kilifi County was in October killed after yet another case of stabbing. 

The girl, who was in her second month since admission, was reportedly stabbed in the neck in a robbery case within the institution’s precincts.

Elsewhere in Eldoret, a third-year student at the University of Eldoret died after succumbing to injuries sustained in a fight.

As per multiple reports, the University of Eldoret student was involved in a fight relating to a love triangle.
