A huge fire razed down part of a boarding school based in Riomego, Nyamira North, Nyamira County.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, February 1, the Kenya Red Cross indicated that the inferno had been reported at around 3PM.
“Riomego Boarding School in Nyamira County is facing a fire emergency. Our response team, actively engaged in response efforts is working to address the situation,” read part of the statement.
Red Cross further revealed that a rescue operation was being conducted in collaboration with its E plus Ambulances Kenya.
Although response teams indicated that they were at the scene, the cause of the blaze was yet to be identified.
Additionally, the extent of the damage to the facilities within the learning institution and any number of casualties is not yet clear.
By the time this article was published, the inferno had been razing down the school for more than 30 minutes.
Fire burns down dormitory
Back in January 2018, a dormitory in the school was also brought down into ashes after a fire razed it down under unclear circumstances.

According to the school’s principal, the dormitory which housed a hundred pupils was burnt down when the learners were attending a Church service.
He further revealed that the school guard first saw smoke billowing from the dormitory, prompting him to raise alarm upon realizing the building was on fire.
However, efforts to put out the blaze turned futile as all the pupil’s property went up in flames by the time the Nyamira County Fire rescue team arrived at the scene.
Luckily, no casualties were reported after the incident back then.
Losses and injuries reported
In a separate incident, a section of traders was left counting losses after a huge fire brought down stalls along Landhies Road, around City Stadium on the night of Wednesday, January 30, 2024.
Firefighters in Nairobi and Kajiado counties battled the huge infernos, which also left a trail of injuries.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the raging blaze was contained a few hours past midnight.
The statement further revealed that the operation involved a collaboration between the Kenya Police and Kenya Defense Forces teams who jointly worked to contain the inferno.
Following the incident, the humanitarian body later stated that four people were critically injured but were rushed to a hospital.
