At least 22 people have died following a serious road accident involving a passenger bus and a lorry in the Kanga area, past Mtito Andei, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

According to the latest update from Citizen TV, the death toll rose from 20 to 22 after two more people succumbed to their injuries; Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif had earlier confirmed 20 fatalities.

“The death toll from a road accident involving a bus and a lorry along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway has risen to 22 after two more people succumbed to their injuries,” the report read.

The accident occurred at around 7 am on Sunday, October 25, when the bus collided head-on with the lorry, prompting concern over the scale of the tragedy.

The bus was reportedly ferrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony when the accident occurred.

Several other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital for treatment. The bodies of those who died in the crash were taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

In emerging reports shared online on October 25, Sikika Road Safety described the accident scene as terrible and raised fears over the fate of passengers before the confirmed death toll emerged.

The organisation also urged members of the public not to share disturbing videos of the incident.

“There is a terrible accident involving a bus at Kanga Station after Mtito….. It’s like we have lost all the passengers; it’s really looking bad on the video… more updates coming up in a few… It’s terrible… kindly dont post the video if you get a chance to see it,” Sikika Road Safety warned.

Further reports from individuals indicated the crash involved a passenger bus and a lorry on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Meshack Mulwa Maithya described the incident as a grisly accident and called for improved road infrastructure, arguing that a dual carriageway could help reduce crashes along the route.

“Many passengers feared dead in a grisly road accident at Mtito Andei this morning. God heal our nation. A dual carriageway will reduce these accidents,” he said.

Peter Maena also reported the collision, noting that several casualties were feared as details of the accident continued to emerge.

The latest confirmed death toll stands at 22. The updates cited above did not provide the cause of the crash or further details about those affected.
