Nairobi women have pushed back against marriage masterclasses, questioning why women are expected to learn how to become wives when men are not held to the same standard of marriage preparation.
The criticism follows an announcement by Rev. Mercy Masika Muguro about her upcoming BECOMING A WIFE Masterclass, with some women calling for greater emphasis on financial independence, career growth and personal wellbeing.
Additionally, women have challenged the teachings, noting that it places the burden of sustaining marriages disproportionately on women.
The masterclass, featuring Lady Bishop Kathy Kiuna as guest speaker, is a seven-session offering a guide to biblical marriage.
Mercy Masika noted that the guest speaker is among the empowered women who honor God and their husbands.
“I have been blessed with amazing mentors in my marriage journey, and Lady Bishop has been such a powerful example of an empowered woman who honors God and her husband. I am so glad she is part of these classes, empowering women who want to do marriage God’s way. Grateful for wisdom that shapes both heart and mindset,” Rev Masika noted.
According to Mercy, the sessions are scheduled to run from November 21 to December 12, 2026.

Nairobi Women Raise Concerns on Gaps in the Masterclass
Following the announcement, women have called on the gospel singer to teach not only women but also men how to handle their marriages.
Kenyan actress Catherine Kamau, popularly known as Kate Actress, weighed in on the Masterclass, saying she would not comment because she is not an expert on marriage.
Some women supported the idea, emphasizing that the sessions should focus on wealth creation, a point the actress welcomed.
Additionally, some called out the reverend, alleging she was a ‘pick me’ type of woman who believes that men are the ultimate prize and thus the sessions are to convince other women.
Nairobi-based content creator Raych Gitau-Kaymo, speaking from the perspective of a married woman, clarified that marriage is a two-sided effort with everyone having room to grow.
“Unpopular opinion from a married babe: As a married woman, I believe marriage takes two, and we all have room to grow. I want to keep learning how to be a better wife, and I believe my husband should keep learning how to be a better husband, too. So, as we create spaces for women to learn about becoming wives, how are we creating spaces for becoming husbands?” Raych Gitau-Kaymo explained.
Beyond the one-sided teaching that most women have called out, some also noted that, with the levels of unemployment amongst women, practical action should be taken instead of sensitizing women for marriage.
In addition, women have called for intentional addressing of femicide, spousal/parenting negligence and GBV.
