Heavy traffic brought the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway to a standstill in the Gilgil area, leaving motorists stranded for hours.
Road users were advised to plan their journeys and expect long delays as traffic built up along the busy highway.
Photos and videos reviewed by The Kenya Times showed a major traffic gridlock on a dual carriageway, with long queues of vehicles stretching into the distance in both directions.
One side of the highway was lined with heavy commercial trucks, including container trailers and fuel tankers, while the opposite side was packed with private vehicles and vans, many of which were moving slowly or had come to a complete standstill.
The traffic congestion was reported after a truck was involved in a road accident near Naivasha, with the crash partially obstructing the highway and causing a buildup of vehicles.
Traffic Paralyzes Nairobi–Nakuru Highway
Motorists caught up in the traffic jam took to social media to share images and videos of the gridlock, describing the situation as one of the worst they had experienced on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
One motorist, identified as Alfason Kiplagat, posted a photo showing a long queue of vehicles stretching along the Gilgil section of the highway.
“I took this picture a few minutes ago. This is the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at Gilgil. Vehicles are not moving at all. It is one of the worst traffic jams I have ever seen,” he wrote.

ENA Coach Issues Alert to Travellers
The heavy traffic prompted Ena Coach to issue a travel advisory warning customers of delays on several routes.
In a traffic advisory on June 27, the bus company said its Mombasa-bound buses had been operating behind schedule following an extensive traffic snarl-up at Kibwezi that began at about 2:00 a.m.
It added that Nairobi-bound upcountry buses around the Gilgil section had also been affected.
Ena Coach warned that the delays were likely to affect passenger arrivals, parcel deliveries, and afternoon departures as authorities worked to restore normal traffic flow.

Team Swat Sacco also advised passengers to expect delays in arrivals and departures due to the congestion along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, adding that parcel collection services had also been affected.
Mash Poa, on its part, said the traffic had delayed the arrival of all its highway buses as well as buses that departed Nairobi and Mombasa the previous night.
The company also warned that some of its afternoon departures from Mombasa and upcountry would be affected by the congestion.
