The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, while in Rabat reaffirmed the Union’s unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative over the Sahara, while also highlighting the strength of the strategic partnership between the European Union and Morocco.
The visit to Rabat on Thursday April 16, the first of its kind for the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Vice President of the European Commission Mrs. Kaja Kallas came at the invitation of Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita.
Strengthening EU–Morocco Cooperation
During the visit, the two leaders held a joint engagement to discuss Morocco’s autonomy initiative over Sahara and the current strategic partnerships that exist.
The EU representative during the engagement recalled the bloc’s position which calls upon parties to engage in discussions without preconditions with a view of achieving a final political solution.
At the same time, Mrs Kallas also highlighted the future prospects of the cooperation between the European Union and Morocco. He noted that the two parties have agreed to finalize a strategic and comprehensive partnership that will elevate bilateral relations to higher levels
UN Process and Regional Issues
The EU also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2797 (2005, which expresses full support for the Secretary General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations grounded in Morocco’s autonomy proposal.

He further hinted that the EU and Morocco have agreed to reinforce the cycle institutional meetings within the framework of Association Agreement. These meetings will help to ensure continuity and predictability for their cooperation.
The EU Position represents a strong signal in the run up to the UN Security Council meeting scheduled to take place in a few days.
Currently, Twenty-Seven EU member states have approved Morocco’s willingness to explain what shape the autonomy under Moroccan Sovereignty would take.
Likewise, the two sides also discussed regional and international matters of mutual interest including the war in Iran, the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, Ukraine and the Sahel.

Both leaders reiterated their shared commitment to a rules-based international order and effective multilateralism, while highlighting the steady advancement of cooperation frameworks in strengthening ties amid an evolving geopolitical landscape.
