Authorities said that the cause of the accident is still under investigation and further urged motorists to exercise caution and use alternative routes where possible.

One of the survivors while speaking to the press said he had boarded the bus from Bungoma to Nairobi at midnight before the morning crash.

“The bus was being driven safely and at full capacity until we reached a point where the speed accelerated and passengers started asking what the problem could be,” a witness told Nation. Africa.

He further said that he heard a loud bang after the bus hit a stationary truck parked on the road and later collided with another car, veered off the road and fell into the river after hitting a guardrail.

Fifteen killed in separate accidents

The accident happened just days after another road crash occurred a few meters way within the Migaa blackspot, Molo claiming the lives of thirteen people.

Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, who visited the scene, reported that the August 20 early morning incident involved a 56-seater Coast Bus Limited Public Service Vehicle (PSV) bus and a saloon car.

In the incident that happened around 5a.m near the magic wall that was constructed to prevent accidents along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, 55 others were injured.

The Simba Coach bus accident is also among road crashes which have been reported within the last 48 hours that have left casualties.

On Friday, motorists plying the Embu-Meru Highway were caught up in a traffic snarl-up following a road accident involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu and a lorry.

The accident took place at the Mutonga River bridge along the busy highway after a head- on collision between the matatu and the lorry.

It was however not confirmed how many passengers were injured in the accident by the time of publishing.

School bus accident

Barely 24 hours before the Meru incident, two people were confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries following another grisly road accident involving a school bus that they were travelling in.

The Thursday, August 22, 2024, night accident involved a school bus from Archbishop Ezekiel Group of Schools which lost control at the Gitaru area in Kiambu County.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the accident happened when the school bus lost control, rammed into a stalled truck before landing into a ditch leading to the casualties.

Preliminary reports indicate that at the time of the accident, no students were in the bus as it was ferrying passengers who had hired it.

As of July 1, 1024, data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that a total number of 2,407 people have died on Kenyan roads since January 1, 2024.
