KAA on Moi Airport Emergency Drill
In a separate incident on August 6, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) clarified that an incident involving a plane at Moi International Airport was part of a full-scale emergency preparedness drill.
According to KAA, emergency services and first responders were managing the situation on the airside of the airport, an area restricted to aircraft operations, including takeoffs and landings. The Authority later confirmed the scenario was simulated and did not affect normal airport operations.
The emergency drill was conducted to test and strengthen the airport’s ability to handle real-life crises. It featured two simulated incidents:
Aircraft Emergency During Takeoff, where a mock flight (KQA990) was forced to abort takeoff after simulated smoke was detected in the cabin, prompting emergency evacuation, fire rescue, and medical response operations.
And sabotage at the General Aviation Termina,l where two mock explosions tested bomb threat protocols, emergency evacuation, inter-agency coordination, and crisis management.
