Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has directed the Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) to align cluster points with the new grading system used by the Kenya Nation al Examination Council (KNEC).
Speaking during the release of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results in Moi Girls, Eldoret, Machogu said that the Ministry informed KUCCPS and all universities to revise the entry requirements to avoid disadvantaging candidates.
“I am directing KUCCPS and universities to align their cluster points and entry requirements with the new reforms to avoid disadvantaging candidates,” Machogu said.
In his speech, Machogu directed KNEC to forward the official results to KUCCPS ahead of the placement exercise.
KNEC debuted its new grading system in 2023’s KCSE in a bid to increase the number of students who manage to pursue their dream courses in universities and colleges.
In the new system, KNEC used one language (English, Kiswahili, and Sign Language), and mathematics as the compulsory subjects plus five other best-performed subjects to compute the final grade by a candidate.
This, according to the CS, saw an increase in the number of candidates who met the minimum requirement (C+) for joining universities.

Previously, KNEC used grades scored in English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, two sciences and a humanity subject to compute the final grade.
Speaking when he unveiled the new grading system in 2023, Machogu said that the new reform measure will increase the number of students qualifying for universities, diploma and TVET training.

According to the numbers released by Machogu, the number of candidates who attained the minimum university entry qualification (Grade C+ and above) was 201,133.
This represented a slight increase as compared to the number of candidates who attained the C+ grade in the year 2022.
In addition, Machogu directed KUCCPS to conduct career awareness campaigns and put in place measures for TVET admission applications.
