The Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued an update on slain Member of Parliament of Kaspul, Charles Ong’ondo Were.
While addressing the media on Thursday May 5, 2025, in the morning, the IG revealed that detectives probing the murder have retrieved the firearm used to kill the MP.
“As I stand before you today, I have significant findings from a comprehensive ballistic investigation regarding the tragic demise of Charles Were.
The ballistic report that we have received unequivocally links the Sassilmaz pistol recovered from the residence of one of the suspects to the fatal shots that took his life,” said the IG.
IG Reveals Firearm Used to Kill Were
According to Kanja, the critical piece of evidence not only identifies the weapon used in this heinous act, but also reveals its involvement in a series of other criminal activities.
“Specifically, the same firearm has been implicated in three separate robbery incidents across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties, with the most recent crime occurring on April 26, 2025,” added the IG.
Additionally, the Inspector General of Police stated that the progress in the investigation into the slain MP demonstrates the National Police Service’s commitment to resolving the case with the highest standards of professionalism and diligence, vowing to continue pursuing all leads, analyzing forensic evidence, and ensuring all perpetrators are brought to justice.

Further, the police boss thanked Were’s family, friends, and members of the public, stating that they provided valuable information which has driven significant progress in this investigation.
Moreover, the IG reiterated that the National Police Service is committed to pursuing the investigation with the utmost diligence to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice, while also assuring Kenyans that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The update on Were’s death investigation comes just hours after the DCI summoned businessman and politician Philip Aroko to report to the nearest police station, naming him a person of interest in the murder of the Kasipul MP.
Politician Linked to Kaspul MP Murder Surrenders
The politician surrendered to the DCI on the night of Wednesday, April 7, 2025, after presenting himself at Gigiri Police Station, in compliance with the order issued by the investigative agency.
Aroko accused Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga of implicating her in the murder of the Kaspul MP.
“I want to tell the people of Homa Bay County that the politics in that county has been turned to madness, it is not politics, it is thuggery.
I saw the Governor pushing so much for me to be called here; she is making calls to the police for me to be called here,” Aroko alleged.

So far, nine suspects are in custody over the murder of Kaspul MP after the police arrested two suspects on Wednesday, including a bodyguard attached to the slain MP.
