President Willaim Ruto has appointed former Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong as the chairperson of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD/APRM) Kenya Governing Council.
Ruto made the announcement in a gazette notice, indicating that Ojaamong will serve in the position with effect from the June 14, 2024, for a period of three years.
“It is notified for general information of the public that pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 4651 of 2016, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, have appointed—
“SOSPETER ODEKE OJAAMONG to be the Chairperson of the NEPAD/APRM Kenya Governing Council, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 14th June, 2024,” the statement read in part.

Sospeter Ojaamong Responds to Appointment
The former governor thanked the Head of State for selecting him for the job, promising to execute the role with diligence.
“Thank you, President Ruto, for the appointment, I will serve Kenya with diligence and impartiality.
“I am deeply honored and grateful for the trust and confidence you have placed in me by appointing me as Chairperson of the National Governing Council of the NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat,” read his statement.
Following the appointment, Ojaamong will be tasked with coordinating NEPAD projects across the Ministries, Counties, Departments, Agencies, Development Partners and other stakeholders.
Other Appointments
At the same time, Ruto appointed Albert Cege as the chairperson of the Kenya Academy of Sports Council and Patricia Ithau as chairperson of the Kenya Millennium Development Fund.
Additionally, he appointed Bernadette Nganga chairperson of the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board and Professor Ratemo Waya Michieka as chancellor of Tharaka University.

Political Career of the Ex Governor
Ojaamong served for two terms as Busia Governor from 2013 to 2022. Before his election as the inaugural governor of Busia, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the defunct Amagoro Constituency between 2007 and 2013.
He was an MP under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.
However, in the August 2022 polls, Ojamoong lost the Teso South Parliamentary seat to Mary Emaase of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Later in January 2023, he shifted his allegiance from ODM to Kenya Kwanza, pledging his loyalty to William Ruto.
