In a subsequent update, KAA said the incident happened at the airside of the airport.
KAA explained that the response team is handling the situation, but normal operations have not been affected.
Emergency response teams are actively managing a situation on the airside at Moi International Airport. Airport operations remain normal and unaffected.
Airside is the part of an airport used by aircraft for loading and unloading and takeoffs and landings.
It is the area beyond security checks and passport and customs control in an airport terminal.
KAA Emergency Drill Exercise
KAA has confirmed that the incident is part of an emergency drill at the airport.
The Authority has explained that the exercise is meant to ensure highest safety and security standards at Moi International Airport.
We would like to confirm that the emergency response at Moi International Airport was part of a full-scale emergency drill emergency drill. The exercise was part of our commitment to maintaining the highest safety and security standards at our airports.
KAA explained that the comprehensive Full Security and Safety drills is designed to test and reinforce the airport’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
The exercise simulated two critical scenarios, enhancing coordination among airport emergency services, airlines, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure maximum readiness in the event of real emergencies.
The exercise simulated two scenarios:
- Aircraft Emergency During Takeoff: Flight KQA990 aborted takeoff after smoke was detected in the cabin. Emergency protocols were activated swiftly, enabling safe evacuation of passengers and crew, medical response for multiple injuries, fire and rescue operations, and effective crisis communication.
- Sabotage Incident at the General Aviation Terminal: Two consecutive explosions were simulated, testing the airport’s bomb threat management, emergency evacuation, medical assistance, and inter-agency coordination under high-pressure conditions.
KAA assures the general public that the incident was entirely simulated and posed no danger to passengers, crew members, or airport operations. The safety and security of all participants were strictly observed throughout the exercise.
The Authority said International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) mandates civil aviation airports to conduct such full-scale emergency drills at least once every two years to evaluate their emergency response capabilities.
