The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Moi International Airport (MIA), Eldoret International Airport (EIA), and Kisumu International Airport (KIA) have joined an elite group of airports.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) in an announcement has indicated that the airports have joined the environmentally conscious airports in East and Central Africa group.
This is a big deal, not just for Kenya but for the whole of East and Central Africa.
KAA noted that it had attained a Level 3 Certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Program for the four airports.

What This Means
KAA noted that the new status is proof that airports can be eco-friendly while still serving millions of travellers every year.
“The certification was awarded because of KAA’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and engaging stakeholders to create greener skies,” stated KAA.
The ACA Programme, run by the Airport Council International (ACI), is a global system that helps airports reduce their carbon footprint.
Level 3, called Optimization, is about not just reducing emissions at the airport itself but also working with other airlines, passengers, and partners, to make the whole ecosystem greener.
The goal is to become carbon neutral by 2030 and reach Net-Zero emissions by 2050.

What JKIA and Other Airports Have Done So Far
Each of the four airports has implemented unique sustainability measures.
JKIA is leading the group with energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy, and serious waste reduction programs, while MIA (Mombasa) leads in Solar panels, LED lighting, and keeping equipment in top-notch shape.
Additionally, the Kisumu International Airport boasts solar-powered streetlights and a green terminal as well as regular equipment maintenance, while EIA was recognized for replacing old lighting with LEDs and Solar bollard lights in concourse areas.
KAA’s Acting Managing Director and CEO, Henry Ogoye, expressed his excitement for the certification saying that it was a result of hard work.
“We are thrilled to achieve this important milestone, which underscores our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainability within the aviation sector.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff and stakeholders who have collaborated to implement sustainable practices across our airports,” he said.
