Kenya Airways (KQ) has warned passengers to expect further flight delays as it works to clear a backlog of flights following the suspension of the air traffic controllers’ strike.

In an update issued on September 1, 2026, the national carrier said its teams had begun restoring flight schedules after the strike was called off earlier in the day.

“Customers should expect some delays as our teams restore flight schedules,” the airline said.

Kenya Airways said it expected normal operations to resume by Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The airline said affected passengers would receive flight status notifications through SMS, WhatsApp and email.

It also advised customers to check their flight status and update contact details through the Kenya Airways website or the KQ mobile application.

Kenya Airways Issues Advisory

According to Kenya Airways, passengers can reschedule their flights at no additional cost.

The airline directed customers to seek assistance through its Customer Excellence Center on +254 711 024 747 or via WhatsApp on +254 705 474 747.

The carrier apologized for the inconvenience caused by the disruption and thanked customers for their patience and understanding.

“Your safety and that of our staff remain our number one priority. We are ready and available across our network to assist and serve you as we work towards resuming normal operations,” the statement said.

The announcement comes hours after air traffic control workers called off their strike, paving the way for the gradual restoration of flight operations at airports across the country.

However, airlines are expected to take time to fully normalise schedules due to disruptions caused during the industrial action.

Jambojet Resumes Operations

Jambojet has announced the resumption of normal flight operations following the lifting of the air traffic control (ATC) workers’ strike that disrupted aviation services across Kenya.

In an operational update issued at 6:30 a.m. on September 1, 2026, the airline confirmed that the industrial action had been called off, allowing flights to resume.

“We are pleased to confirm that the strike has been lifted and Jambojet will resume normal flight operations today,” the airline said in a statement.

However, the carrier cautioned passengers that some delays could still occur as it works through the backlog created by the disruption and progressively restores its full flight schedule and aircraft movements.

End to Aviation Workers’ Industrial Action

KQ’s notice comes as the government has successfully brokered an agreement between the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Jambojet.

The agreement, reached on Tuesday, September 1, after intensive consultations involving government officials, union leaders and aviation stakeholders, paves the way for the immediate restoration of normal operations in the sector.

According to a statement issued by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, the talks were supported by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua and involved senior officials from the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Labour, COTU-K, KCAA, KAA, Jambojet and KAWU.

Under the return-to-work agreement, KAA will immediately remit agency fees that had been withheld and were among the major issues raised by the union.

However, the dispute over the Recognition Agreement between KAWU and Jambojet remains before the courts and will continue to be handled through the judicial process.

Following the agreement, KAWU officially called off the industrial action with immediate effect and directed affected employees to resume normal duties.

“All parties therefore commit to a swift restoration of normal aviation operations, maintaining industrial peace and resolving any outstanding and future grievances through dialogue, conciliation and established legal mechanisms,” the statement said.

The parties further agreed that no employee would be victimised or subjected to disciplinary action solely for participating in the industrial action.

The government urged all stakeholders to honour the return-to-work agreement and uphold professionalism to ensure uninterrupted aviation services.
