The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced traffic disruption along the Nairobi Southern Bypass (Kikuyu-bound) between the Virtual Weighbridge and the Ngong Interchange.
In an announcement on July 5, 2025, KeNHA stated that the traffic disruption was caused by an oil tanker that overturned, blocking the road.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority regrets to notify the public of the temporary closure of the Nairobi Southern Bypass (Kikuyu Bound) between the Virtual Weighbridge and Ngong Interchange. This is due to an oil tanker that has overturned on the road, blocking traffic passage,” announced KeNHA.
Traffic Disruption Along Nairobi Southern Bypass
Motorists were advised to use alternative routes, including Waiyaki Way and Uhuru Highway, until the affected section is reopened.
KeNHA also urged all road users to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals managing the situation on site.
In the videos shared by the authority, traffic officers and rescue teams were seen coordinating efforts to clear the area and assist in controlling the flow of vehicles.
Moreover, heavy traffic is visible in the area, with many motorists seen standing outside their vehicles as they wait for the road to be cleared.

Road Closure During Marathon
Meanwhile, motorists have been urged to plan their routes carefully and anticipate major traffic disruptions during the Nairobi City marathon that will take place on July 6, 2025.
The Nairobi Expressway will be fully closed in both directions—from James Gichuru to JKIA—starting at 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, and will reopen at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 6.
On Waiyaki Way, the inner lanes will be closed from Musa Gitau Road to the expressway entrance between midnight and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Other Roads to be Closed
Both Mombasa Road and the Southern Bypass (at the Likoni Road crossing) will also be disrupted from midnight to 11 a.m. on Sunday, affecting several roundabouts and key access points into the city.
Uhuru Highway will be closed from midnight to 2 p.m. on Sunday, with the closure impacting sections between the Southern Bypass and Lang’ata Roundabout, as well as between Bunyala Roundabout and Kenyatta Avenue.
In addition, Kenyatta Avenue will be closed from the Panafric Hotel to Uhuru Highway between midnight and 4 p.m. on Sunday.
All races – the 42km, 21km, 10km, and the 4km fun run- will begin at Uhuru Park and take place largely along the Nairobi Expressway.
