The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of several roads in Nairobi ahead of the Nairobi City Marathon.
KeNHA in a notice on Saturday, September 7, listed the roads set to be affected by the Marathon and the time.
The third edition of Nairobi City marathon will be hosted on Sunday and is expected to begin at around 6:30 am.
The 42-kilometre race is aimed at supporting local athletes, promoting tourism and raising money for charity.
Among the roads that will be closed temporarily include the Nairobi Southern Bypass, Waiyaki Way, Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road which shall be closed at midnight today.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the Public that there will be a temporary closure of Nairobi City roads, among them, Nairobi Southern Bypass, Nairobi Expressway, Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, and Lang’ata Road on Saturday September 7, 2024, at Midnight to Sunday September 8, 2024, at 2.00pm,” said the Authority.
“This is to facilitate the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon.”
Motorists have been advised to follow the traffic signs and guidance as directed by the Police and Traffic Marshalls.
Affected Roads
First, the Nairobi Expressway will be temporarily closed from the James Gichuru exit all the way to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) exit from Saturday 10.pm to Sunday 3.pm.

Moja Expressway, the company tasked with managing the infrastructure, had earlier in the day made the announcement about the closure.
In a statement, the company also confirmed that it would communicate when the expressway will resume operations.
Motorists were also advised to plan accordingly for alternative routes during the affected period.
Waiyaki Way
On the other hand, Waiyaki way will be closed between the James Gichuru and Expressway entrance. According to KeNHA, 2 inner lanes on both sides of the road will be closed between Sunday 12AM & 10AM.

Motorists heading to Westlands direction have been advised to use James Gichuru and Muthangari Roads. On the other hand, the Authority said that Lang’ata Road can be used by motorists accessing southern areas while Ring Road is an alternative for Westlands route.
KeNHA lists other roads
The section Crossing Thika Superhighway Exit A2 to UHURU Highway, Mombasa Road direction will be closed between Sunday 12AM & Sunday 1PM.
Harry Thuku Road (both sides), University Way (between Highway Roundabout & Harry Thuku-both sides), and Koinange Street will also be closed between Sunday 12AM Sunday 2PM.
Other roads set to be closed are Koinange Street (between University Way & Kenyatta Avenue), Kenyatta Avenue (between Koinange Street & Wabera Street), City Hall Way (between Wabera Street & Taifa Rd) and Harambee Avenue.
Uhuru Highway (between Popo Rd Roundabout & A2 Thika-both sides), Langata Road (between Douglas Wakiihuri Rd & Uhuru Highway), Wakiihuri Rd and Bunyala Rd (between Bunyala Roundabout & Enterprise Rd) will be closed between Sunday 12AM & Sunday 2PM.
