The Kenyan football fraternity has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of Kakamega Homeboyz defender Silas Abungana.
According to a public announcement by Kakamega Homeboyz FC, the player passed away while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, days after turning out for his club in a league match against Mara Sugar.
Abungana allegedly died after being attacked by his younger brother following a family dispute, with relatives allegedly pressuring him to leave his wife, whom they did not consider suitable for the family.
Abungana’s death sent shockwaves across the Football Kenya Federation ranks, with clubs, players, officials, and fans expressing grief over the sudden loss of a player who was actively involved in top-flight football.
Kakamega Homeboyz Confirm Demise
Kakamega Homeboyz confirmed that Abungana died a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4.
The club said the defender succumbed to head injuries sustained during the attack that occurred on Tuesday night, February 3, days after he featured in the league match against Mara Sugar.
According to the club, Abungana was admitted to Kakamega County General Hospital following the attack and was undergoing treatment when his condition deteriorated.
Despite medical efforts, he later passed away, leaving the club and football fraternity in deep grief.
“The club can confirm that Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday,4 February while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, 3 February night,” read the statement by the club.
Homeboyz described his death as a devastating loss and asked for privacy and respect for the family during the difficult moment.

The club said Abungana was a committed professional who represented the team with discipline and pride.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The club will issue further communication in due course. Rest in Peace, Silas,” the club concluded in the statement.
Silas Abungana Background
Silas Shihemi Abungana was a Kenyan professional footballer who played as a defender.
Abungana began his top-flight football journey with Shabana FC, where he spent several seasons helping the defence.
During his time at Shabana, he was part of the squad that secured promotion to the FKF Premier League in the 2022-23 season, a major achievement for the club and an important milestone in his career.
That campaign saw Shabana dominate the National Super League (the second division), finishing atop the standings and securing automatic promotion back to the FKF Premier League for the 2023–24 season.
His move was seen as a step forward, giving him the opportunity to continue competing at the highest level of Kenyan football.

At Homeboyz, he wore jersey number 31 and featured in league matches as part of the club’s defensive unit.

In a statement shared shortly after confirmation of his death, the club described the news as devastating and extended condolences to Abungana’s family, friends, and everyone associated with Kakamega Homeboyz FC.
“Such devastating news. Mathare United would like to send its condolences to Silas’ family, friends and everyone associated with Kakamega Homeboyz FC. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Silas,” the club stated.
AFC Leopards SC joined the Kenyan football fraternity in mourning the death of Abungana.
“AFC Leopards SC joins the Kenyan football fraternity in mourning the sudden passing of Kakamega Homeboyz FC defender Silas Abungana. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. Rest in peace,” Ingwe posted.
