Protestors Set Lake Nakuru National Park on Fire

Protestors have set a section of Lake Nakuru National Park on fire amid tensions over the whereabouts of Brian Odhiambo, a man who was reportedly caught fishing in the park.

In a video seen by The Kenya Times, flames of fire can be seen spreading in parts of the Lake Nakuru National Park.

According to reports, at least 20 Kimathi Secondary School students received treatment after police lobbed teargas to disperse a crowd protesting the disappearance of Brian Odhiambo.

The protests have been ongoing for the fifth consecutive day.

Learning has been in schools since the protests began within the National Park, including Lake View, Kimathi, and Flamingo schools.

Protests Around Lake Nakuru National Park 

Brian reportedly went missing on Saturday January 18, 2025, after allegedly being taken captive by officers from the Kenya Wild Service (KWS).

Odhiambo’s family has been searching for him since his reported disappearance, including in hospitals and morgues within Nakuru, but it has been in vain.

“The DCI told us that they are going to summon some of the KWS officers. We went around the medical facilities, but we did not find him there. We have walked ward by ward, but we did not find him.

We walked around the casualty and mortuary sections, but we still did not find him,” Alvy Okello, Brian’s wife, said.

Nakuru East Member of Parliament, David Gikaria, addressed the protestors on Wednesday, January 22, calling for the prosecution of the KWS officer who allegedly abducted Brian Odhiambo.

Vocal Africa CEO and Activist, Hussein Khalid on Wednesday January 22 also called for the government to promptly move with speed to investigate on the whereabouts of Brian.

“Can the government follow up with KWS rangers and tell us where Brian is,” Khalid said.

50-year-old man demands justice after allegedly being assaulted by Solio Ranch security officers

For a while, there has been conflict between security officers manning national parks and locals.

Recently, a 50-year-old man in Nyeri was allegedly assaulted by five security guards at Solio Ranch for trespassing.

Simon Mwangi, while addressing the media on January 14, recounted that he was kidnapped on Wednesday, January 8, after closing his boda boda work.

He explained that after stepping off his motorbike, five men approached him and informed him that he was under arrest for trespassing on Solio Ranch and later manhandled him.
