The organizing committee handling former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s funeral arrangements has made some changes.

In an update on Friday, October 17, 2025, the Committee announced that, due to unavoidable circumstances, the body of Raila Odinga will not be taken to his Karen residence for an overnight stay as earlier planned.

“The National Funeral Committee wishes to inform the public that, due to unavoidable circumstances, the body of H.E. the late Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga will not be taken to his Karen residence for an overnight stay as earlier scheduled,” read the statement shared by ODM.

Instead, the committee stated that after the public viewing, currently taking place at the Nyayo National Stadium, the body will be taken back to the Lee Funeral Home for preservation in readiness for airlifting to Kisumu on the morning of Saturday, October 18.

The organizing committee further apologized for any inconvenience caused by the changes made.

A day earlier, the committee announced another change, moving the body viewing of the former Prime Minister from Parliament to Kasarani Stadium. This change was due to the huge crowd gathered outside Parliament, which made it impossible to accommodate everyone who wished to view the body.

The Saturday public viewing, initially scheduled for Moi Stadium in Kisumu, has since been moved to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo. After the public viewing, his body will be taken to his Opoda Farm in Bondo for a night vigil.

Details About the Former Prime Minister’s Death

Raila Odinga’s funeral service will take place on Sunday, October 17, 2025, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University grounds. Thereafter, the former Prime Minister will be buried at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in India.

He collapsed from a cardiac arrest during a morning walk in Koothattukulam, Kerala.

The death was confirmed by the Devamatha Hospital in India, his family, and officials in his office.

His brother, Oburu Oginga, had previously confirmed that Odinga was indisposed and recuperating after undergoing a medical checkup in India.

President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning beginning October 15 and announced that Odinga would be accorded a state funeral. Ruto described him as “the father of our democracy” and a “once-in-a-generation leader” whose ideals transcended politics, citing the milestones achieved by the long-serving politician.
