The National Police Service (NPS) has warned the public of a serious traffic gridlock along the Nairobi – Mombasa Highway.
In a statement on May 30, 2025, NPS stated that the reason for the traffic disruption was a fatal accident involving three trailers that collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the road.
“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to notify the public of a serious traffic gridlock between Emali and Masimba along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the authority stated that it is working with the relevant agencies to restore traffic flow.
NPS Issues Alternative Routes on Nairobi – Mombasa Highway
According to the authorities, police officers have been deployed to Nairobi – Mombasa Highway, and they will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules.
Moreover, NPS has issued alternative routes to the public apart from Nairobi – Mombasa Highway and cautioned the motorists to maintain lane discipline and exercise patience.
“Mombasa-bound traffic should consider using the Machakos-Wote-Makindu route, while Nairobi-bound traffic can use the Makindu-Wote-Machakos route,” read the statement.
Additionally, the National Police Service (NPS) reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding law and order on the roads.

KeNHA Announces Temporary Closure of Road
Additionally, the Kenya National Highways Authority announced on May 26, 2025, a temporary closure of Nyaru – Flourspar – Kapkayo – Tenges (B124) road at Kaptoror Village, Turesia Sub-location (13 km from Nyaru).
“The closure has been occasioned by massive landslides caused by the ongoing heavy rains within the area,” part of the statement read.
As a result of these landslides, heaps of soil and debris have blocked a significant section of the road. Additionally, huge cracks have emerged on the road, hence compromising the safety of road users.

Alternative Routes
Motorists plying this route have been urged by the authorities to use an alternative route that is Nyaru – Kamwosor – Ketigoi – Fluorspar.

NTSA Begins Crackdown on Matatus
Consequently, NTSA now wants all PSV operators to immediately check their vehicles and fix any issues to meet the rules set in the 2014 PSV regulations.
Further, the authority warned that those who fail to comply risk having their vehicles impounded or their licenses suspended or cancelled.
“Considering the foregoing, all licensed Public Transport Operators are hereby directed to conduct an immediate and comprehensive audit of their fleets to ensure full compliance with the requirements of the Regulations,” NTSA directed.
