Ugandan MP Dies in Hospital

A Ugandan politician by the name of Muhammad Ssegirinya passed on Thursday 9 January 2025.

His death was announced by Lubaga Hospital based in Uganda.

“With deep sorrow, Lubaga Hospital announces the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Honorable Member of Parliament for Kawempe North.

Hon. Ssegirinya has been under the dedicated care of our medical team at Lubaga Hospital. Despite all efforts to ensure his recovery, he passed away today, Thursday, 9th January 2025, at 12:10 pm,” the statement read.

Ssegirinya passes on at Lubaga Hospital

The hospital further extended its heartfelt condolences to the Parliament of Uganda, his family, and his constituents, whom he represented with passion and commitment.

“We join the nation in mourning a dedicated servant of the people. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” read the statement in part.

Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias “Bobi Wine,” said his burial arrangements will be announced in due course.

At the same time, he sent his message of condolences, saying, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him, we shall return.”

Earlier, Wine shared that the doctor attending to Ssegirinya had informed him that the politician was brain dead, with most of his organs having shut down, though he had not yet been declared dead.

“According to the doctors, Ssegirinya Muhammad is brain dead, and most of his organs have shut down, but he has not yet been declared dead. When his mother received the news, she immediately announced his passing. Our teams are on the ground monitoring the situation as we all pray for a miracle,” Wine stated.

Profile of the deceased politician

Muhammad Ssegirinya was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North in Uganda’s 11th Parliament following the 2021 general elections.

Prior to this, he served as the Lord Councillor representing Kawempe Division.

His health significantly worsened since his release from prison, prompting him to seek medical treatment both locally and abroad.

Born as Richard Ssegirinya in 1988 in Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District, Uganda, he was raised in a Catholic family but later converted to Islam, adopting the name Muhammad.

Ssegirinya earned a certificate in Urban Food Experience from the Netherlands. For his education, he completed primary school in Kadugala and later attended Kaddugala Secondary School, followed by Pimba Secondary School in Kyebando for his secondary studies.
