The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has detailed essential items whose prices rose or dropped in April 2025.
According to a report released on April 30, the overall year-on-year (annual) inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 4.1 per cent in April 2025, an increase from the 3.6 per cent recorded in March 2025.

In addition, KNBS reported that the month-to-month inflation rate was 0.3 per cent in April 2025.

KNBS lists food items whose prices increased and decreased
As a result, the prices of several food items increased. According to the report, the price of 1 kilogram of potatoes increased by 4.0 per cent while that of 1 kilogram of beef increased by 0.3 per cent.
At the same time, the price of one kilogram of tomatoes increased by 1.2 per cent while that of 2 kilograms of fortified maize flour increased by 2.6%.

Additionally, a kilogram of maize grain increased by 2.9 percent while a kilogram of Sugar increased by 0.7 percent.
The report, on the other hand, indicated that the price of 2 kilograms of wheat flour reduced by 0.9 percent in April, while the price of a kilogram of Kales (Sukuma wiki) reduced by 2.3 percent.
At the same time, a litre of cooking oil reduced by 1.1 percent while a kilogram of traditional vegetables reduced by 2.2 percent.

Non-Food Items
KNBS has reported that non-food items whose prices increased include matatu bus fare for instance between Malindi and Nairobi has increased by 22.2 percent, and the cost of electricity (50 Kilowatts) increased by 3.8 percent.
At the same time the cost of electricity (200 kilowatts) increased by 3.4 percent and cooking Gas/LPG (13kgs) increased by 0.3 percent.
The report, on the other hand, indicated that the price noted that the price of a litre of petrol decreased by 1.1 percent while that of a litre of diesel and kerosene decreased by 1.3 and 1.6 percent respectively.

About KNBS Statistics
Collection of retail prices for the compilation of the CPI is usually conducted during the second and third weeks of every month.
Prices of different commodities are collected from selected retail outlets located in 50 data collection zones. Out of the 50 data collection zones, 14 are located in Nairobi City County while 36 are located in other urban areas. Nairobi zones cover outlets in lower income, middle income and upper income areas.
Year-on-year inflation is used mainly for economic decision making as current situation is compared to previous year situation, same period.
Inflation rate is defined as a percentage change of the CPI between two periods (consumer price inflation).
