Kenya Electricity Generating Company  (KenGen) has retained its position as Kenya’s biggest electricity producer, accounting for 57.52% of the country’s total power generation in the 2025/26 financial year.

According to the Energy and Petroleum Statistics Report for the year ended June 30, 2026, the company generated 8,974 GWh during the year ended June 30, 2026, putting it well ahead of other producers and electricity sources supplying the national grid.

However, KenGen’s grip on the electricity market has weakened over the past five years as private power producers and electricity imports have taken a larger share of the market.

KenGen Tops Kenya’s Top 10 Electricity Market Shares as Electricity Imports Gain Ground

KenGen’s market share stood at 62.90% in 2021/22 before falling to 57.52% in 2025/26.

The decline has come as Kenya’s electricity generation has expanded and more power has been supplied by independent power producers and neighbouring countries.

Electricity imports recorded one of the biggest changes during the period under review.

Their combined market share rose to 12.18% in 2025/26, up from 2.68% in 2021/22.

Ethiopia was the biggest source of imported electricity, supplying 1,577.66 GWh during the year.

This gave Ethiopian imports a 10.11% share of Kenya’s electricity market.

Uganda also contributed 322.06 GWh through UETCL, representing 2.06% of the market.

The Energy and Petroleum Statistics Report attributed the growth in imports to bulk power imports from Ethiopia through the HVDC link, revision of the import quantum from UETCL and energy exchanges with Tanzania.

Private Power Producers Maintain Significant Share

Independent power producers also continued to play an important role in Kenya’s electricity supply.

Lake Turkana Wind Power generated 1,466 GWh during the year, accounting for 9.40% of the market.

The project, however, has also seen its market share decline from 12.49% in 2021/22 to 9.40% in 2025/26.

Orpower 4, operated by Ormat Technologies, generated 1,034 GWh, giving it a 6.63% share of the market, while Rabai Power followed with 467.75 GWh, equivalent to 3%.

Kipeto Energy generated 413.75 GWh, representing 2.65%, while Sosian Menengai Geothermal contributed 311.37 GWh, or 2%.

Thika Power accounted for 1.23%, while Alten Kenya Solar Farm contributed 0.71%.

Overall electricity generation increased from 12,592.56 GWh in 2021/22 to 15,601 GWh in 2025/26.

KenGen remained the largest contributor, supported by its diversified portfolio covering geothermal, hydro, wind, solar and thermal generation.

The report noted that the changing market shares reflect increased private-sector participation and diversification of Kenya’s electricity generation mix.
