Copia Kenya Limited has entered a new phase after the High Court of Kenya at Nairobi issued a liquidation order and appointed two KPMG officials as joint liquidators.
In a notice dated September 24, 2026, issued under the Insolvency Act, the court confirmed the appointment of Anthony Makenzi Muthusi and Julius Mumo Ngonga as joint liquidators of Copia Kenya Limited.
“NOTICE is given that (1) Anthony Makenzi Muthusi and (2) Julius Mumo Ngonga, c/o KPMG Advisory Services Limited, ABC Towers, Waiyaki Way, P.O. Box 40612-00100, Nairobi in the Republic of Kenya, have been appointed as the Joint Liquidators (“Liquidators”) of Copia Kenya Limited (Under Liquidation) (“the Company”) pursuant to the liquidation order issued on the 17th of September 2026,” the notice read in part.
Copia Kenya High Court Liquidation Order
These appointments follow a liquidation order issued on September 17, 2026, in Insolvency Cause No. E106 of 2024 at the High Court of Kenya in Nairobi.
The notice shows the case was heard under the Commercial and Tax Division of the High Court and concerns Copia Kenya Limited, which is now listed as under liquidation.
Both appointed officials are based at KPMG Advisory Services Limited, with the notice giving their address as ABC Towers, Waiyaki Way, Nairobi.
Their appointment formally places the company under the management of joint liquidators in accordance with the court order.
Copia Kenya’s Rise and Funding Challenges
Copia Kenya was built as a technology-driven e-commerce business targeting rural and peri-urban households through a network of local agents.
Copia Global, which operated the Kenyan business, raised about US$123 million (KSh15.9 billion) from investors to expand its operations in Kenya.
At its peak, the company employed about 1,800 people and operated through a large network of agents serving customers outside major urban centers.
Financial pressure intensified in early 2024 after Copia failed to secure additional funding on acceptable terms.

Copia Global subsequently began winding down, leaving Copia Kenya to seek funding directly while continuing with a scaled-down version of its ordering and delivery operations.
In May 2024, Copia Kenya entered administration, with Anthony Makenzi Muthusi and Julius Ngonga of KPMG appointed as administrators.
Rescue Efforts Fail and Asset Recovery Efforts
During the administration period, efforts focused on restructuring the business, reducing costs, and finding fresh funding or a potential buyer.
Operations continued on a reduced scale as administrators sought to raise capital and stabilize the company.
Despite the rescue efforts, the business could not secure enough funding to revive its operations.
On March 17, 2026, the administrators filed Insolvency Petition No. E106 of 2024 at the High Court, arguing that Copia Kenya could no longer meet its debts.

A Gazette Notice published on May 6, 2026, subsequently invited creditors and contributories to support or oppose the petition at a hearing scheduled for May 11.
The development marked a shift from efforts to rescue the company under administration towards liquidation and the realization of its remaining assets.
In a judgment delivered on April 23, 2026, the High Court raised concerns about aspects of the administrator’s conduct, stating that certain actions and inactions had not been in the best interests of creditors.
The court also noted that steps had been taken to realize some of Copia Kenya’s assets.
Remaining matters included the sale of assets, collection of money owed to the company, and resolution of tax issues with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
These developments preceded the September 17, 2026 liquidation order, which placed Copia Kenya into liquidation and led to the formal appointment of two joint liquidators.
