Kenya Railways has announced that refunds will be issued to passengers affected by the suspension of the Madaraka Express passenger train.
In a public notice dated July 15, 2025, the corporation addressed the cancellation of the 10:00 PM service from Mombasa to Nairobi, which had been scheduled for July 6.
“Kenya Railways wishes to inform passengers affected by the suspension of the 10:00 PM Madaraka Express passenger train from Mombasa to Nairobi on 6th July 2025 that refunds will be issued to those who were unable to travel via the alternative train options provided,” read part of the statement.
Additionally, Kenya Railways stated that refunds will be issued to passengers who were unable to travel using the alternative train options provided.
Kenya Railways Announces Refunds to Passengers
According to the notice, passengers who had not printed their tickets will have their refunds automatically processed to the mobile number used during ticket purchase.
As for those who had printed their tickets, they are advised to present the printed copy at the nearest terminus or station for refund processing.
The commuter service provider apologized for the inconvenience caused and thanked passengers for their patience and understanding.

Why the Madaraka Express Passenger Train Was Suspended
According to Kenya Railways, a “technical hitch” was the reason behind the abrupt suspension of the train service.
In a public statement issued July 7, the service provider said it was working tirelessly to resolve the issue and assured passengers affected by the July 6 cancellation that they would be accommodated on a special morning service.
“All affected passengers are advised to report to the Mombasa Terminus on July 7, 2025, by 8 a.m. for travel. Tickets dated July 6 will be deemed valid for boarding,” Kenya Railways said.
About the Passenger Train
The Madaraka Express Passenger Service operates between Mombasa and Suswa stations, serving a total of 13 destinations.
It is designed to provide a high-quality, safe, and punctual rail travel experience.
The service offers three daily options:
- Inter-County Train: Departs both Mombasa and Nairobi Termini at 8:00 AM daily, making scheduled stops at Mariakani, Miasenyi, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Emali, and Athi River stations.
- Afternoon Express Train: Leaves both termini at 3:00 PM with a stopover at Voi station.
- Night Train: Departs at 10:00 PM from both ends and runs nonstop to its destination.
The passenger service runs Monday to Friday, linking Ngong Station, Ongata Rongai Station, and Nairobi Terminus. It provides a reliable and efficient option for daily commuters travelling between these key points.
