The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has explained that Kenyans can now register for electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) through a USSD.
In a notice on Tuesday, March 19, the revenue authority indicated that businesses could use *222# USSD code instead of registering through the website.
To register through the code, users have been directed to select option 5, Tax Payment (KRA), when a pop-up prompts.
Further, enter option 2, which is eTIMS Invoice, then Enter your ID Number. Another pop up will direct you to enter your year of Birth.
Users should then confirm that the information provided in accurate before clicking the register button to complete the process.

What is eTIMS
It is a software that was launched by KRA as a solution for taxpayers to submit their invoices electronically. Everyone running a business is required to on-board eTIMS and issue electronic tax invoices.
“The law requires that for any person to claim their business expense, the expense must be supported by an electronic tax invoice.
“Therefore, all persons engaged in business are required to issue electronic tax invoices, whether registered for VAT or not (non-VAT taxpayers),” KRA states.
KRA on Businesses in Informal Sector
In a March 4 notice, the authority directed that businesses including those in the Informal Sector and Small Businesses were required to electronically generate and transmit their invoices.
Additionally, it announced that it had developed ‘eTIMS Lite’ for non-VAT registered taxpayers.
Taxpayers and representative bodies who may experience challenges adopting the existing solutions were asked to reach out and further explore solutions for their specific needs.
“One such consideration is the reverse invoicing solution where a seller can/may give consent or authority to the buyer to issue invoices on their behalf,’ read the statement in part.
