Standard Group, Unga and StanChart Announce New Leadership Changes

The Standard Media Group, Unga Limited, and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya have announced leadership changes in their organizations.

The Standard Media group announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer, Unga Group Ltd has a new acting Group Managing Director, while Standard Chartered Bank Ltd appointed a new Director.

The Board of Directors of Standard Group appointed Marion Gathoga Mwangi as the Group CEO, effective July 15, 2024.

Ms. Mwangi succeeds Joe Munene, who has been serving as acting CEO since July 6, 2023, after Orlando Lyomu resigned. 

Before this appointment, Marion held several executive roles with The Linde Group PLC companies. She served as Healthcare Director at African Oxygen Pty (AFROX), where she led initiatives to improve access to medical gases across Africa.

Her leadership also included roles as Business Unit Director of the Bulk and Onsite Manufacturing Business in South Africa and Managing Director at BOC Kenya PLC.

Standard Media Group Appointment

She has previously held senior leadership positions including Country Director at Cadbury Kenya and East Africa Limited, General Manager at Unga Limited Pic (Seaboard Corporation) and Country Director, Parmalat Botswana Pty in Gaborone, Botswana.

Gathoga has also had a long and distinguished career with Bayer East Africa.

She also serves as a Non-Executive Director at leading companies including BAT Kenya PLC, BOC Kenya PLC and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM).

Gathoga holds a Bachelor of Science (Honors) Degree in International Business Administration from the United States International University (USIU) Kenya.

She is a Continuous Improvement (KAIZEN) practitioner and has led successful corporate turnarounds with this expertise. She is a part time Academic Director of the Women in Leadership program at Strathmore Business School (SBS).

UNGA Group Limited

On the other hand, Unga Group Plc has appointed James Nyutu as the Acting Group Managing Director effective 4th June 2024.

His appointment follows the departure of Joseph Choge who has been the Group Managing Director.

Nyutu has been serving as the Group Finance and ICT Director for Unga Group PLC and its subsidiaries.

He is an accomplished management professional with over 20 years of experience and will provide strategic oversight of the Group’s operations and general management functions.

Nyutu also has extensive experience in the manufacturing industry and a proven track record of success that will be critical in steering Unga during this transition phase.

He is a holder of a master’s in business administration from Edinburgh Business School, Heriot – Watt University and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Nairobi. 

His professional qualifications include Certified Public Accountant (Kenya), Certified Public Secretary (Kenya), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS).

Standard Chartered Bank Kenya 

Similarly, Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited announced the appointment of Robert Mbugua as an independent Non-Executive Director with effect from June 4, 2024.

Robert brings a wealth of leadership and banking experience and diverse skills in audit, finance, risk and corporate governance.

Robert was previously a Partner in the Johannesburg office of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and subsequently held various senior executive roles within Standard Bank Group.

He co-founded and is the immediate former Chief Executive Officer of Co-op Bank Fleet Africa Limited.

Robert is currently Chair of the Board of BOC Kenya PLC and also serves as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Old Mutual Holdings PLC.

He is a qualified accountant and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Bond University Graduate School of Business, Australia.
