Moi University has announced curfew hours for students effective July 19, 2025. In a notice, the Secretary General of the Moi University Students’ Organization (MUSO), Edwin Lagat Kisorio, said students should be in their rooms by 11:00 pm.
“All students are strongly advised to be settled in their respective rooms by 11:00 PM,” Kisorio said.
Kisorio said the decision has been prompted by the security concerns raised by the students.
The institution prepares to launch joint patrols along the routes between the university premises and the stage in a bid to enhance security.
“Following recent concerns regarding student safety, this is to inform you that, effective today, a joint patrol will be conducted between the University premises and Stage areas. This initiative is meant to ensure the security of all students, especially during the night,” he added.
The Secretary General asked students to respect the curfew and support the University in ensuring their security is guaranteed.
Kisorio also apologized to those students who had organized parties and events beyond 11:00 pm.
He asked the students to prioritize their safety and work with the institution to enhance security.
“Kindly adhere to this directive for your own safety and to support the efforts being made to maintain a secure environment,” he said.
“We sincerely apologize to those who had planned parties or social events tonight and beyond. Your cooperation is highly appreciated as we prioritize safety above all. Stay safe. Stay responsible.”
Moi University Troubles
Moi University has been on the spot over its operations, mounting debt, controversial staff layoffs, and the viability of its academic programs.
Members of Parliament (MPs) have raised concerns about the university’s financial woes, citing mismanagement of funds, insolvency, and a crippling wage bill that has forced the institution to seek financial aid from the government.

While appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Education on June 17, Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kiplagat said the university is now operating with a debt load of Ksh8.8 billion.
Kiplagat said the University declared a redundancy exercise on May 13, which affected 376 employees.

“We followed the Employment Act, consulted unions from the outset, and expect to save Ksh 120 million monthly once the process concludes,” Kiplagat said.
The Committee had tasked the institution to find alternative ways to increase revenue through income-generating activities, such as leveraging its idle assets, conducting short-term training, and improving consultancy services.
In June, Moi University announced the disposal of cows, donkeys, and dogs in a public auction.
