Ukraine has conducted a drone strike on Russia’s Olenya air base, located near Murmansk, earlier today. The Olenya air base is a critical site for Russian long-range aviation, hosting strategic bombers like the Tu-22M3 and Tu-95MS used in attacks on Ukraine.
The Ukrainian drone strike caused large explosions and fires, disrupting Russian military operations. This strike is part of Ukraine’s ongoing strategy to target key Russian military infrastructure, demonstrating its ability to conduct deep-strike missions.

Due to the base’s strategic role, the attack may affect Russian capabilities and escalate the conflict. Olenya air base is located in Russia’s far north, over 1,800 km from the Ukrainian border, making this strike notable for its long-range capability.
Visuals from Russian sources have shown large explosions and smoke, indicative of fires and potential destruction of aircraft or infrastructure.
The Russia-Ukraine war has seen several significant events as of June 1, 2025. Two bridges collapsed in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions, bordering Ukraine, killing at least seven and injuring dozens, with explosions suspected and trains derailing on May 31, 2025.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched an estimated 109 drones and five missiles across their country on Friday and overnight into Saturday.
Ukrainian defences destroyed 42 drones, but the attack resulted in casualties, including one child killed and one person wounded in Dolynka, Zaporizhia, and one man killed by shelling in the Kherson region.
Russian forces have made territorial gains, capturing Vodolahy in the Sumy region and Novopil in the Donetsk region. In response, Ukraine ordered the evacuation of 11 villages in the Sumy region due to the presence of approximately 50,000 amassed Russian troops.

The Kremlin, through its spokesman, stated on June 1, 2025, that Russia and Ukraine are expected to discuss the list of conditions for a ceasefire in Istanbul next week. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented that no clear plans have been communicated by Russia, leaving the outcome uncertain.
