An estimated 3.5 million Kenyans in arid and semi-arid areas are battling starvation occasioned by prolonged drought seasons, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has said.
The latest data from NDMA shows an increase in the number of people facing starvation by 400,000 from the 3.1 million who were in a similar situation in February.
According to NDMA, some 17 out of the 23 arid and semi-arid lands counties are facing acute shortage of food.
Among the worst affected counties are Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Samburu, Isiolo, Baringo, Turkana and Laikipia.
NDMA says that the country has so far lost more than 1 million animals that include cattle, goats, sheep and camels due to lack of pasture and water in the Northern counties .
