Milimani Anti-Corruption Court sentenced two officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after they were found guilty of receiving bribe.
Corporal Julius Onyango Oguma and Police Constable Charles Macharia Wanjiru were sentenced to five years and one year in prison respectively.
The two were found guilty of receiving a bribe, concealing evidence and obstructing Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers on duty.
Further, the officers shot at EACC officers in an attempt to evade arrest while receiving Ksh.200,000 bribe from a Chinese national who was in the country illegally.
The Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki ruled that the prosecution had proved the case against the two beyond any reasonable doubt.
“In this one you can blame yourself because you are the one who went away with this money. Ordinarily I would have considered a more linear sentence,” said Nzioki.
Oguma was fined Ksh.500,000 for receiving a Ksh.200,000 bribe or in default serve one year in prison.
Further, he was fined a mandatory fine of Ksh.3,000,000 or serve three years in prison.
Also, Oguma was fined Ksh.400,000 for concealing evidence or in default serve another one year in prison.
“In the sentence you add 12 months plus 3 years that’s four years plus 12 months that is a total of five years. The choice is yours; I have allowed you to at least raise the money,” ruled Magistrate Nzioki.
On the other hand, Macharia was fined Ksh.400,000 for obstructing EACC officers on duty or serve one year in prison.

DCI Officers Arrest Drama
In 2018, EACC received a report that the two DCI officers had detained a Chinese national at Kabete Police station for being in the country without proper documentation.
They had demanded a bribe of Ksh.1,000,000 to set him free.
EACC moved to arrest one of the officers, Oguma, while receiving the bribe of Ksh.200,000 as part of the demanded amount.

However, the mission was not successful after the officer was assisted to escape by his colleague, Macharia, who fired several shots at EACC officers.
The suspects were arraigned before May 29, 2022, after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) agreed with the EACC recommendations that they be charged for their offences.
Previously, they had been remanded at the Industrial Area prison since the investigations into the matter began.
The sentencing comes at a time when the EACC has intensified the fight against graft.
