While some places in the city are secure and serene, other neighbourhoods have gained an infamous reputation for high insecurity and crime rates.

Such areas have all kinds of crimes, including kidnapping, mugging, drug peddling, and armed robbery.

Crime Reports by SRIC & CRC
A report from the Nairobi region Security Research and Information Centre (SRIC) stated that most areas are found in the Eastlands side of the city.
Some of the crime hotspots in the city are Kiamaiko, Kayole, Eastleigh, Kibera, Mathare, Githurai 45, Lunga Lunga, Makadara, and Kamkunji.

The rise in these crimes in the capital city, after findings and research by the Crime and Research Centre (CRC) deduce that the most contributing factor is unemployment.
Other factors include alcohol, drugs and substance abuse, idleness, and poverty, which add to an increase in all sorts of crime.
Insecure Neighborhoods in Nairobi & its Environs
- Kamukunji
This includes areas in Eastleigh, Huruma, Kiamaiko, Majengo, and Mathare. Recently, they have been an alarming crime rate that includes luggage stealing, assault, armed robbery, drug peddling, kidnapping, mugging, and break-ins.
Further, gangs like Gaza Boys continue to terrorize the areas even after countless crackdowns.
- Lang’ata
Some areas in Lang’ata are safe, however, areas such as Kibera, Soweto, Migingo, and Highrise are crime hotspots.
Cases of theft during broad daylight and at night, armed robbery, assault, and break-ins have been seen and reported.
- Embakasi
Places such as Kayole, Soweto, Maringo, and Gitari have become law-breaking areas.
Moreover, all kinds of crimes have been witnessed in daylight and at night. Kidnapping, theft, assaults, armed robbery, and mugging became the order of the day.

Major crimes in Kawangware (Congo), MauMau, Kosovo, and areas around Waithaka kwa Ng’ang’a have been recorded, especially in the evenings and early mornings.
