Police Gun Down Gang Members in Fierce Fire Exchange

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers on Thursday, December 5 gunned down gang members who have been terrorizing Kakamega residents and neighbouring counties.

In a statement, the DCI confirmed that 2 gang members were killed in an operation that was conducted by its officers.

“A team of detectives from DCI HQS deployed to pursue an armed gang that has been operating with impunity in Kakamega, and neighboring counties have recovered an AK 47 rifle after a gunfight with two of the gang members.

The latter were also fatally injured in the process,” the statement read.

DCI reveal how the gangsters were felled 

According to DCI, the operation was conducted after they had obtained intelligence to where the suspects were hiding prompting its officers to head the suspect’s hideout.

Upon arriving at their hideout in a rented house in Matungu village, the operators comprising DCI’s Operation Action Team and Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau cordoned the rental unit, ordering the suspects to step out and surrender.

In defiance, the gun-hardened duo opted for a battle of guns, only to be neutralized at the sound of cocking the rifle from inside the house.

From the house of the suspects house who are yet to be identified, a rifle loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition and a Bajaj motorcycle were found.

Police in the area believe that the recovered motorcycle belongs to a fellow police officer who is in a coma at a Kakamega hospital, after he was confronted by a machete-wielding gang on the night of November 12, 2024 in Butere township.

The exhibits have been secured and the bodies moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and fingerprinting for identification.

A similar incident occurred on April 14, 2024, in Nakuru North Sub-County when a significant law enforcement operation led to a clash with a dangerous gang. This encounter ended with the shooting of two gang members and the retrieval of a deadly LIAI rifle.

This action was in response to a pattern of armed robberies that had been terrorizing the region, believed to be carried out by this particular gang.

The operation was executed by a collaborative team from the DCI Headquarters, DCI Nakuru North, and the local police station head from Lanet.
