Police, through the National Police Service (NPS), have intensified investigations into reports of an alleged mass grave at Makarbuni Cemetery in Kericho County, with officers now recording statements from witnesses as part of efforts to verify the claims.
The NPS, in a statement dated March 22, confirmed that its officers promptly visited the site after the reports emerged and secured the area to preserve the integrity of potential evidence.
“Following the alleged discovery of a mass grave within the Makarbuni Cemetery in Kericho County, and in line with our mandate, officers from the National Police Service in Kericho promptly visited and secured the scene to preserve the integrity of potential evidence,” read the NPS statement in part.
Authorities indicated that the case remains at a preliminary stage, with investigations focused on establishing the accuracy of the allegations.
NPS Secure Scene as Investigations Begin
According to the NPS, securing the cemetery was a priority step to ensure that any potential evidence is not tampered with.
The police noted that the process is being handled within their legal mandate, with measures in place to support a thorough and orderly investigation.
They emphasised that the matter is being treated seriously, given the nature of the claims, and assured the public that all procedures are being followed to determine the facts surrounding the alleged discovery.

Witnesses Record Statements as Probe Expands
Investigators have begun questioning witnesses, with several individuals already having recorded statements.
Police are also working to identify and locate additional persons of interest who may provide further information relevant to the case.
“At this preliminary stage, we are seeking to establish the veracity of the claims. Some witnesses have since recorded statements, and efforts are underway to locate and interview more persons of interest in this matter,” they noted.

The NPS stated that the investigation will be conducted professionally and transparently, with a focus on ensuring that all available information is assessed.
Furthermore, the authorities affirmed their commitment to conducting impartial, thorough, and expeditious inquiries in accordance with the law.
Members of the public have been urged to remain calm as the investigation continues.
Police have also appealed for any information that may assist in the probe to be reported to the nearest police station or shared via official toll-free numbers, including 999, 911, and 112, or anonymously through designated reporting channels.
