The Aga Khan University (AKU) Medical College, East Africa, has received international accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-I).
The recognition covered four residency programmes, which include Internal Medicine and Radiology that received initial accreditation, while Paediatrics and Child Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology earned continued accreditation.
Lukoye Atwoli, Dean of AKU Medical College, East Africa, said the recognition proves that the institution meets world-class standards in training doctors.
“This achievement is a testament to the international quality standards we have set for ourselves. We expect to maintain this status and serve as an example to other health professional institutions in the region,” he said.
AKU is currently the only institution in East Africa to be accredited by ACGME-I, meaning its residency programmes meet the same standards as some of the best medical schools in the world.
The accreditation process involved a thorough peer review that checks whether institutions have the right infrastructure, policies, and systems to provide high-quality training.
Atwoli noted that the accreditation will allow AKU’s residency programmes to be benchmarked globally, giving its graduates a competitive edge in the medical profession.
