Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) introduced a senior school system in which Grade 10 learners choose pathways, tracks and subject combinations based on their interests, abilities and future career aspirations. Senior school is organised around three main pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science.

However, choosing a particular pathway does not automatically qualify a learner for a specific profession. Many careers require additional education, training, examinations or professional qualifications after senior school.
- STEM Pathway
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway is for learners interested in science, technology, mathematics, and technical fields.
STEM is divided into three tracks:
- Pure Sciences
- Applied Sciences
- Technical Studies
The Pure Sciences and Applied Sciences tracks give learners opportunities to study combinations of subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture, and Computer Studies, depending on the combination selected.

Technical Studies, meanwhile, provides opportunities for learners interested in practical and technical areas.
Careers Linked to STEM
The STEM pathway can provide a foundation for learners who later want to pursue fields such as:

- Laboratory sciences
- Agriculture
- Architecture
- Environmental and biological sciences
- Technical and engineering-related professions
The specific career a learner can eventually pursue will depend on the subjects taken at senior school, their performance and the entry requirements of the institution or professional programme they later join.
For example, a learner interested in medicine may need to pay particular attention to the relevant science subjects and later meet the requirements for admission to a medical training programme.
Similarly, learners interested in engineering, computing or technical professions need to consider the subject combinations that best support those areas.
- Social Sciences Pathway
The Social Sciences pathway is designed for learners interested in people, society, business, communication, languages and related areas.
It has two main tracks:
- Humanities and Business Studies
- Languages and Literature
The Humanities and Business Studies track provides opportunities for learners interested in areas such as business, economics, history, geography and other social science-related subjects.
The Languages and Literature track suits learners interested in languages, communication, literature, and related areas.
Careers Linked to Social Sciences
Learners taking Social Sciences can later pursue further education and careers in areas such as:
- Business and entrepreneurship
- Economics
- Law
- Education
- Journalism
- Communication
- Languages
- Literature
- Social sciences

- Related people and society-focused professions
The pathway can therefore suit learners interested in understanding society, working with people, communicating ideas, or pursuing business-related careers.

As with STEM, the pathway itself does not guarantee entry into a particular profession. Learners must meet the requirements for their chosen course or profession after senior school.
For instance, a learner who wants to become a lawyer would still need to meet the relevant university and professional requirements after completing senior school.
- Arts and Sports Science Pathway
The Arts and Sports Science pathway is intended for learners with interests and abilities in creative, performing and sporting activities.
It has two main tracks:
- Arts
- Sports
The Arts track supports learners interested in creative and performing disciplines, while the Sports track offers opportunities for learners who want to develop their abilities in sports and related areas.
Careers Linked to Arts and Sports Science
Depending on their subjects and further training, learners in this pathway can pursue areas such as:
- Music
- Dance
- Theatre
- Film
- Fine arts
- Creative design
- Sports
- Coaching
- Sports management
- Performance and other creative professions
The pathway is particularly relevant for learners whose strengths are demonstrated through creative expression, performance or sporting ability.
However, learners should also consider the additional training and professional development required for specific careers within the creative and sports industries.
Why Subject Combinations Matter
While learners choose one of the three broad pathways, they also must consider the specific subject combination available to them.
This matters because schools do not necessarily offer every subject combination within a particular pathway.
For example, two senior schools may both offer STEM but provide different subject combinations. A learner interested in computing, engineering or health sciences therefore needs to check whether the school they select offers the relevant combination.
The Ministry of Education’s Grade 10 selection system provides information on pathways, subject combinations and senior schools, allowing learners to compare the options available before making their selections.
Can a Learner Change Career Direction Later?
Choosing a pathway at Grade 10 gives a learner a particular direction in senior school, but it should not be viewed as a guarantee that they must remain in one career for the rest of their life.
The subjects studied, performance, interests and opportunities available at later stages of education can all influence a learner’s eventual career path.
For this reason, learners should avoid choosing a pathway simply because they believe it is more prestigious or offers more career options.
Instead, they should consider the subjects they perform well in, the areas they enjoy, and the careers they want to explore.
