Grade 10 learners face a major decision as they choose among three senior school pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), with the choice expected to shape the subjects they study and the careers they may pursue.

The Ministry of Education offers three pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science, each offering different tracks and different subject combinations.

STEM suits learners interested in science, technology, practical work, and problem-solving. The pathway includes Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences and Technical Studies, with options such as agriculture, computer studies, aviation and woodwork.

Learners who choose STEM can pursue careers in fields such as medicine, engineering, ICT, architecture, scientific research and technical trades.

CBC Career Pathways

On the other hand, Social Sciences is designed for learners with strengths in communication, analysis, reading, debate and areas such as history and business. Its tracks include Languages and Literature, Humanities and Business Studies.

According to the Ministry of Education, the pathway through its subject combination can lead to careers in law, journalism, diplomacy, teaching, economics and business management.

Meanwhile, Arts and Sports Science targets learners with strengths in creative arts, performance and sports. Its tracks include Fine Arts, Music, Theatre and Film, and Physical Education and Sports Science.

The pathway provides opportunities in areas such as professional sports, music, graphic design, fine arts and media performance.

Parents and learners should base the choice on academic strengths, teacher feedback and assessment results, rather than selecting a pathway based solely on the learner’s hobbies.

Learners should also consider their long-term interests and broad career goals, while avoiding the pressure to settle on one specific profession at Grade 10.

Subject Combination for Arts and Sports

Under the Arts track, learners can choose from a range of subject combinations. These include Computer Studies, Fine Arts, Music and Dance; Fine Arts, General Science, Music and Dance; Fine Arts, Hindu Religious Education, Theatre and Film; and Christian Religious Education, Fine Arts, Theatre and Film.

Other combinations include Arabic, Fine Arts and Theatre and Film; Fine Arts, German and Theatre and Film; Fine Arts, Mandarin Chinese and Music and Dance; Fine Arts, French and Music and Dance; and Christian Religious Education, Fine Arts, Music and Dance.
