In April 2025, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that national schools would be required to offer all three career pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The pathways are Social Sciences, Arts and Sports, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Speaking during a national schools conference in Mombasa, Ogamba said the decision was informed by the capacity, staffing and infrastructure available in national schools as the government moved to align senior schools with CBC.
The new arrangement was set to take effect in January 2026, when Grade 9 learners would transition to Grade 10.
Ogamba further announced that the existing classification of schools as national, extra-county, county and sub-county institutions would be scrapped from next year.
Under the new system, senior schools will instead be designated as either triple-pathway or double-pathway institutions, depending on the number of career pathways they offer.
“The State has already developed guidelines for the transition and placement of students to Grade 10 in January 2026. The abolishment of categorization of schools as either national, extra-county, county or sub-county is a key point of the transition guidelines,” he said.
