Dickson Nyariki is the current Vice Chancellor of Murang’a University of Technology (MUT), appointed on January 26, 2018.
He is also a Professor in the Department of Land Resources Management and Agricultural Technologies at the University of Nairobi.
Prior to his appointment, Dickson Nyariki served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Human Resource Management at the Southeastern Kenya University (SEKU) and as Deputy Principal (Administration and Finance) at South Eastern University College.
He completed a Bachelor of Range Management in 1983 and a Master’s in Agricultural Economics in 1990 at the University of Nairobi.
Nyariki holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.
Dickson Nyariki Career Background
He began his teaching career at the University of Nairobi (UoN) while pursuing his master’s degree, supporting the Department of Range Management.

In 1991, upon completing his Master’s, he was formally appointed as a Lecturer in Agricultural Economics.
Between 1999 and 2004, Dickson Nyariki was promoted after completing his PhD. During this time, he also served as the Chairman of the Department of Range Management.
In 2004, he was appointed an Associate Professor in the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Science.
From 2005 to 2008, Dickson served as a Regional Coordinator for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
In 2010, he served as a Deputy Principal, Administration and Finance, at Southeastern University College (SEUCO), and was promoted to full professor in 2013.
After SEUCO was promoted to South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Nyariki served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Human Resource Management.
In 2016, Muranga University College transitioned to a full university, and he was moved to Murang’a University College as the Principal and the acting Vice-Chancellor.
Family Background
Dickson Nyariki was born in December 1959 in Mesaria Village, Kisii County.
He is the son of Mzee Sebastiano Nyariki and the late Omong’ina Lucia Kerebi Nyariki.

Nyariki is the second-born in a family of six children.
He is married to Lydia Gichuku and blessed with four children
Achievements
Under his leadership, in 2024, MUT achieved the Gold Tier Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) certification from the African Academy of Sciences.
Between 2005 and 2008, as the IGAD Regional Coordinator, he led a major Water Harvesting Pilot Project across Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Uganda to improve food security and grain production.
Dickson Nyariki has increased the number of accredited degree programmes from 13 in 2016 to over 35 at Muranga University of Technology.
